National Prime Rib Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always April 27

This is my kind of day, the kind of day you can sink your teeth into. National Prime Rib Day gets your mouth watering, and starts you drooling. Many of us look to this day on the calendar to enjoy one of America’s favorite steaks.

For just a day, forget about the diet. For just today, don’t fret over the high fat and cholesterol content. And mad cow?………. well isn’t prime rib worth the risk? After all, if you don’t have some prime rib today, you’ll be “madder than a wet……cow!”

There’s only one way to celebrate Prime Rib Day. And, that is with a big, thick, juicy cut of prime rib, cooked perfectly to your liking. Don’t forget the au jus and the fully loaded baked potato.

National Pretzel Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always held on April 26

National Pretzel Day celebrates pretzels of all shapes and sizes.

How do you like your pretzel? Thick or thin? Straight or twisted? Crisp and crunchy, or soft? Salted, unsalted, mustard flavored, perhaps? There’s no shortage of types of pretzels. If you are having trouble deciding which ones, we suggest you mix a bunch of different types of pretzels in a big bowl, and grab a handful, or two, or three, or…..

Did you know? Pretzels are believed to be the world’s oldest snack. Pretzels date back to 610AD in Southern France. Catholic Monks baked thin strips of dough into the shape of a child’s arms folded in prayer. Add a little salt, and Voila! …the pretzel industry was born.

While pretzels were first baked in France, pretzels have been popular in German bakeries for hundreds of years. In the U.S., the first pretzel was baked in 1850 in Lititz, Pa., by Julius Sturgis.

National English Muffin Day – The “Toaster Crumpet”

Date When Celebrated : This holiday event is always held on April 23

English muffins are believed to have been created in the 10th or 11th century in Wales, England. They were first called a “Toaster Crumpet”. Samuel Bath Thomas, a British immigrant to the United States, is credited with introducing the English muffin to the United Sates in 1894. Always toasted, English muffins were originally served in the finest restaurants and hotels. It didn’t take long for this tasty treat to make it’s way to the average American breakfast table.

The versatile English muffin was first served as part of the breakfast meal, or as a quick morning bite to eat, before heading out for a busy day. It’s versatility became quickly apparent, and nowadays is consumed for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. For breakfast, toasted English muffins are slathered with butter, which soaks into all of the nooks and crannies. We all have our own homemade version of the Egg McMuffin. Ours is called the “Egg McDaddy”. For lunch, you can load it up with your favorite meats, cheese and condiment. Kids love peanut butter and jelly on English muffins. For dinner time, it acts as the side bread, or you can pile almost anything on top of it. Try heaping some Mac and Cheese on an English muffin… yum! English muffins make great snacks, too. Use them as a base for mini pizzas.

This is such an enjoyable and tasty holiday. It’s easy to participate, too. Just pop an English Muffin in the toaster or toaster oven. Then, top it off with whatever your prefer!

We hope you thoroughly enjoy National Toaster Crumpet Day, errr National English Muffin Day !!

Kindergarten Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday event is always held on April 21

It’s Kindergarten Day. The first day at Kindergarten is a memorable, exciting, nervous, and anxious time for mother and child. Most children and mothers will never forget the first day at Kindergarten. Hopefully, it was a good experience for all!

Kindergarten Day is celebrated in honor of Friedrich Froebel. He was born on this day in 1782. In 1837, he started the first Kindergarten in Germany. It became popular quickly. Kindergartens were originally a 1/2 day to get children acclimated into learning, social interaction, and school, in a fun, yet educational manner. Kindergarten has evolved in most areas into a full time program. This is partly the result of increasing pressures on education, and partly due to the increase in working mothers in America.

Celebrate today with a trip down memory lane. Pull out the old pictures of you and/or your child’s first day at Kindergarten.

Look Alike Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always April 20

Oh Boy! It’s Look Alike Day. Time to look like somebody else…..copycat.

Today’s a day to find someone you really look up to, and try to look like them. Start with the hair. Cut and style your hair, as needed,  to look like the person you’ve selected to look like. Then, select items from your wardrobe (or buy some new clothes!) that your lookalike wears. Along the way, make sure to practice and copy their walk, their talk, and their facial expressions. In other words. try to be as identical to that person as possible.

The best example of look alikes are Elvis Presley impersonators, who number in the hundreds, and perhaps even thousands. You also have a look alike somewhere out there. It is said that everyone has someone in the world, and perhaps more than one person, who looks just like them. This look alike is called a “Doppelganger”.

Who should you look like? Anyone you want. Its as simple as that. Pick an actor or actress, a singer, a politician, family member or friend.

Look alike contests and parties are a great idea for today.

Most Famous Look Alikes (Impersonators): Elvis Presley, The “King”. Also, current and past presidents.

National Hanging Out Day

Clothes Line Hanging Out Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always held on April 19

So, you think you found a fun day to hang out with your friends, did you? Wrong!!! National Hanging Out Day is about having fun hanging your laundry out to dry. Now that you know what this day is for, you’re probably thinking “I’ve been tricked. This holiday should be titled “National Hang Your Laundry Day”. You are absolutely right on both accounts. We believe that the creator of this day was using word play, to have some fun on our account.

Did You Know? Electric and gas clothes dryers consume 5.8% of residential energy consumption.

National Hanging Out Day was created by Project Laundry List as a protest against local laws banning the hanging of clothes outdoors on an “ugly clothesline”. It was created to encourage people to dry their clothes, indoors or out on clothes line, and to fight for the right to do so. Project Laundry List also encourages and promotes the use of washing your laundry in cold water, for energy and environmental reasons.

For the Record:

  • The earliest clothes dryers were in England and France in the 1800s.
  • Early clothes dryers were called “ventilators”.
  • George T. Sampson of Dayton Ohio patented the first clothes dryer on June 7, 1892. It had a rack and used heat from a stove.
  • In 1955, only 10% of U.S. households had a clothes dryer, as they were too expensive for most families.

There are many reasons to use a clothes line to dry your clothes. Among them are:

  • It saves you money.
  • It saves energy consumption.
  • It’s environmentally “green”, as it does not use fossil fuels.
  • Drying clothes on a clothesline enhances freshness and helps eliminate strong odors.
  • It is gentler on clothes.
  • Hanging clothes requires a little exercise on your part.
  • Eliminates the risk of dryer fires.
  • Many people today, have no idea what a clothesline or a clothes pin is!

String up a clothes line. Search your basement for the clothes pins. And, have a very Happy Hanging Out Day!

Deep Thought fro Today: “By all means marry. If you get a good wife, you will become happy. If you get a bad wife, you’ll become a philosopher.” – – Socrates

History and Origin of “National Hanging Out Day”:

This holiday event was founded in 2007 by “Clothesline Activist” Alexander Lee. It started in protest to a growing numbers of local laws and regulations banning hanging clothes on “ugly clotheslines”. Lee and his organization Project Laundry List fought against these laws, citing the many benefits of hanging clothes on a clothesline and the right to do so.

Pyle, also known as Ernie, was a Pulitzer Prize winner who reported from both the European and Pacific theaters during the Second World War. He died while reporting in Okinawa.

Dangerous Situations

The purpose of the unofficial holiday is to appreciate the work that journalists do to inform people, create public opinion, keep people in power accountable and to bring to light important stories. The day is especially dedicated to columnists and journalists around the world who work in dangerous situations with the sole aim of uncovering the truth for the benefit of the society.

The National Society of Newspaper Columnists was founded in 1977 as a professional organization for columnists and journalists.
