International No Diet Day

Date When Celebrated: This holiday is always held on May 6

International No Diet Day encourages us to appreciate the bodies we have. You could consider it a “Big” backlash against becoming little (err thin) people. This day is intended for us to appreciate the body we have. It encourages us to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes……. and that’s okay.

Anti-diet groups exist to assist and support people who suffer illnesses like anorexia, in their efforts to shed fat and be thin.  In addition to anorexia, other medical problems can result from taking diet pills, and surgeries, such as stomach stapling, to control weight.

Keep Calm And No Diet Happy International No Diet Day

International No Diet Day is a good opportunity to re-assess and evaluate your weight management goals and perspective, and to make certain your efforts to be thin don’t come at a risk to your health. If you decide that continuing your diet is right for you, then use today to take a one day break.

Cinco de Mayo Day

ate When Celebrated : May 5

On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla. This single military battle signified defeat of a European colonial power, and a victory for the Mexican people. This single battle was the roots of Cinco de Mayo.

Note: Cinco de Mayo is not the celebration of Mexican Independence which is celebrated on September 16th.

What Cinco de Mayo has come to be, is much more than one battle in the colonial history of Mexico. Rather, it has come to signify Hispanic and Mexican pride and a time to celebrate the rich culture.

Today,  this holiday is celebrated by Mexicans, and especially the Hispanic community in the U.S. It is a time of song, dance, partying, and in general a time to be proud to be of Hispanic descent.

Garden Meditation Day

Date When Celebrated: This holiday is always on May 3

Walk out to your garden. Roll out your meditation mat, and assume a yoga position, as today is Garden Meditation Day.

Every gardener knows that gardening is good for the mind, body, and soul. It is also known that meditation gives us inner peace and tranquility. It helps us to connect with ourselves, and even with nature. So, Garden Meditation Day is an outstanding merging of the values and benefits of gardening and meditation.

Per C.L, Fornari, the creator of this special day:

“Garden meditation day honors the fact that when we’re working in the landscape we have the opportunity, if we choose to take it, to let the rest of the world fall away. This is indeed what meditation is: letting go of all thoughts, concerns, worries and focusing on just one thing…in this case, what we’re doing in the garden. It is as calming as a mantra, or focusing on the breath, to name two common forms of meditation. So those who seek a spiritual retreat, a calming yoga experience, actually have that in their own backyards!”

How can we celebrate and participate in Garden Meditation Day? Fornari suggest “Pick one thing to do. It could be pulling weeds, planting seedlings, turning soil or spreading mulch. Go out with the idea that you’ll spend X amount of time on that task…it could be 20 minutes or two hours…it doesn’t matter but be realistic. Leave your cell phone in the house. That’s right, leave your phone behind! (You can do it.) As you work, focus only on what your task at hand is. When you notice other things that have to be done, thank your mind for mentioning those but tell yourself you’ll think about those tasks later. Gently turn your mind and body back to the one job at hand every time you’re distracted. At the end of your work, or when your time finishes, take satisfaction in what you’ve accomplished. A deep breath, and then return to the world.”

For those of us who are already gardeners, we know this feeling full well. For those of you yet to try your hand at gardening, use today to find the joy, peace, serenity, and therapeutic value of gardening. You’ll be glad you did

.

If you do not have a garden, and have no way of creating one, here are some great places to do your meditation today:

  • An Arboretum
  • A Botanical garden
  • A park

Brothers and Sisters Day

Date When Celebrated: This holiday is always on May 2

Brothers and Sisters Day is a day to cherish your siblings. Sure, there are times when you love your brothers and sisters. And, there’s times when you want to disown them. All in all, having a brother and/or a sister or two, is invaluable. The older you get, the more you learn to appreciate them.

Celebrate Brothers and Sisters Day by touching them in some way.  A card or a phone call is appropriate for those who are separated by too many miles. A visit, or sharing a meal together, is a great way to enjoy this special day.

Don’t have a brother or sister? Become a “Big Brother” or Big Sister”. Chances are, there is an organization in your area. And, they need your help.

U.S. National Fitness Day

Date When Celebrated: This holiday event is held on the first Saturday in May

Do you want to live a longer, healthier life? Then, physical fitness should be one of your top priorities. National Fitness Day in the United States was created as a way to encourage us to get off the couch, turn off the television, and work out. According to the creator, the goal of this day is to “celebrate strength and empowerment through fitness”. Today you are encouraged to “get your sweat on”.

Use today, to establish a regular routine of exercise, and to maintain a regular exercise schedule all your life. So, you think it’s hard to begin a lifetime of regular workouts and physical exercise. You also might feel that it is hard to fit exercise into your already busy schedule. Absolutely no one will disagree with you. Getting started is the hardest part. Start out slow. Getting started can be painful. In the beginning, your body may immediately disagree with your “no pain, no gain” exercise plan. In the early days of your new workout routine, just remind yourself that you are adding many years onto your life. Then, in a little while some amazing things happen. The aches and pains subside, eventually going away entirely. All of a sudden, you feel better, much better. You are stronger, you have more energy, your endurance goes up, and you can do physical things you haven’t been able to do in years.

So, on National Fitness Day, we energetically encourage you to begin your new workout and exercise routines…. for life!

Note: There are two “National Fitness” days. There is one in the U.S. in May. The other is in the United Kingdom, and is celebrated in September. It is great to have a day in these two countries, to promote physical health and well being. However, this is an issue for all human beings all over the planet. We might suggest that the creators of these two important holiday events, get together to expand this to an international holiday held annually on a single date. Short of that, we encourage people all over the world to celebrate both of these days by doing things to get healthy and to stay healthy.

National Honesty Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday event is always held on April 30

National Honesty Day encourages us to be honest today, and everyday. We honestly believe you try your best to be honest al of the time.

Honesty is a great virtue. As the saying goes, “Honesty is the best policy”. If we want people to believe us when its important, then we need to be open and honest all of the time. We all know about the boy who cried wolf. When a wolf actually appeared, no one believed him.

Honesty was instilled in the character of our nation even before its birth. As a child, George Washington who would become our first president. could never tell a lie. ( Learn more) And, President Abraham Lincoln was well known as “Honest Abe”.

Celebrate National Honesty Day in a completely open and honest way.

To be totally honest, there are few rules for this special day……just be honest.

Today’s Quote: ” Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.” – – Thomas Jefferson

History and Origin of “National Honesty Day”:

M. Hirsh Goldberg, former press secretary to a governor of Maryland and author of five books, created National Honesty Day in the early 1990s after spending four years researching and writing The Book of Lies (Morrow). This book has been translated into Japanese, Korean and Chinese.

Goldberg created this day, because he felt that the month of April, which begins with a big day of lying (April Fools Day), should end on a higher moral note.

National Zipper Day

29th April (2021 ) National Zipper Day, Celebration, History, About

Date When Celebrated: This holiday event is always April 29

Zip it or unzip it, for today is National Zipper Day. Zippety Doo Dah!

Did you ever stop to think about where we’d be without the zipper? We’d be wasting countless minutes every day, using buttons, hooks, clasps, and string ties to open and close our clothing. With the advent of the zipper, one quick zip, and your clothes are quickly and comfortably opened or closed.

Thankfully, the zipper was invented in 1851 by Elias Howe. On April 29, 1851, Howe applied for a patent for the “Continuous Clothing Closure”.  Strangely, Howe never marketed it. In 1893, Whitcomb Judson started the Universal Fastener Company and began selling the “Clasp Locker”. It debuted at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and initially received only a moderate success. In 1913, Gideon Sundback, a Swedish electrical engineer and scientist invented and marketed the modern zipper, only it had not yet  begun to be called a zipper. It wasn’t until 1923 that B.F. Goodrich coined the term “zipper”.

To this day, metal zippers are by far the most popular fastener. The strength and durability of the metal zipper, far surpasses that of plastic zippers. That’s not to say plastic zippers are little used. For example, plastic zip-lock food bags are extremely popular.

Velcro versus the Zipper   Velcro, the “hook and loop” fastener, was invented in the 1940s. It is very popular for a wide variety of uses. Some thought that velcro would make the zipper obsolete. This wasn’t to be. Zippers are stronger and more durable. While velcro is a great fastener, it is noisy and can get clogged with dirt, dust and hairs. Hence the military is not overly fond of it in combat situations.

Today’s Quote: ” God lends a helping hand to a man who tries hard.” – – Aeschylus

History and Origin of “National Zipper Day”:

Now that you’ve learned a lot about the zipper, you probably would like to know the origin of this special day. We know that the date of April 29th was chosen, as this was the date Elias Howe applied for a patent for  the zipper. Unfortunately, we have yet to discover who created this special day, and when it was first celebrated.
