The History and Origin of National Iced Tea Day:

In 1904, English tea plantation owner Richard Blechynden set up a booth to sell hot tea at the St. Louis World Fair. It was a sizzler of a day, and fair visitors didn’t want anything hot. Rather, they needed something to quench their thirst… something cold. He dumped some of his hot tea into ice and served it cold. It was an immediate hit. This was the first known use of iced tea.

Recognizing that this day is in honor of an Englishman, if it is a “National” day, it is an English one.

World Ocean Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always observed on June 8

Oceans are immensely important and vital to humans. It feeds us, producing vast amounts of fish and seafood. We sail it, to bring people and cargo to and from places around the world. There’s recreational boating, too. We swim in it. Oceans are so important to us, that it is only fitting that a day… today… is World Ocean Day.  This is a special global day to celebrate our oceans, and to work towards maintaining and improving their health and cleanliness. As the health of our oceans goes, so goes the health of the entire planet.

Oceans comprise about 71% of the surface of the earth. With their immense size, you would think it is very hard to pollute our oceans. Well, we happen to be doing a pretty good job polluting them.

As if global warming (man-made) was damaging our oceans enough, we humans are exacting a terrible toll on the health of oceans, adding immeasurable amounts of pollutants each and every year.

Did You Know? We are still dumping trash into the ocean. How sad.

Use this special day, to become more knowledgeable about how we are polluting the oceans with litter of all kinds, from just about any source you can imagine. Tsunamis devastate coastal areas and drag pollutants into the sea. A Tsunami in Japan resulted in tons of trash washing up on U.S. west coast beaches. Oil is leaked from oil rigs, ships, and boats. Plastics, which take many years to break down, of all kinds find their way into our seas. Plastics in particular, can have a devastating effect on marine life.

A clean and healthy ocean, translates to healthy marine life. This results in safe and healthy seafood that you and I consume.

Can you name the five oceans of the world?

  • Atlantic
  • Pacific – the largest
  • Indian
  • Antarctic
  • Arctic

What can you do on World Ocean Day, to improve the health of our oceans?

Today’s Quote: “Always follow your heart….. but take your brains with you.” – – Louisiana Senator John Kennedy

The History and Origin of World Ocean Day:

World Ocean Day was first proposed by the Canadian government at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. In 2008, a United Nations resolution made this holiday official.

Since 2004, the organization “Ocean Project”, has strived to advance ocean conservation. On World Ocean Day, this organization works with schools, museums, aquariums, and other groups, to promote and coordinate educational programs about ocean health.

National Chocolate Ice Cream Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always held on June 7

National Chocolate Ice Cream Day is a great day to eat America’s favorite flavor of ice cream.

National Chocolate Ice Cream Day is a field day for ice cream makers. However, we probably don’t need any additional incentive to eat Chocolate Ice Cream. And, with the arrival of warm, summer weather, cooling off with a little (or a lot) of chocolate ice cream is a natural.

Celebrate National Chocolate Ice Cream Day by enjoying it a few times today. It’s as simple as that. Just make sure to eat  it quickly before it melts in the summer heat.

Today’s Quote: “Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears. – – John Lennon

Yo-Yo Day

Date When Celebrated: Always June 6

Yo-Yo day is here…hooray! Not that you need an excuse to play with your Yo-Yo. Wherever you are today, get out your Yo-Yo and impress your friends, family, and co-workers with your Yo-Yo skills. And, do it at work today! If you don’t think it’s appropriate at work, consider the fact that three U.S. presidents (Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon) showed off their Yo-Yo expertise while in office!

It’s origin is hard to factually prove. Many believe that the Yo-Yo originated in China as early as 500-1000 B.C. However, their is some evidence that it was first used in Greece even before this time. Over the centuries the Yo-Yo has had it’s ups and downs (tee, hee).

The classic Yo-Yo was made wildly popular in America by businessman Donald F. Duncan Sr. He manufactured the “Duncan Yo-Yo” in the early 1900’s.

Celebrate the Yo-Yo today by “walking the dog” or “shooting the moon”, the most popular tricks.

Today’s Quote: “A jury should decide a case the minute they are shown it, before the lawyers have had a chance to mislead them.” – – Will Rogers

History and Origin of Yo-Yo Day:

This holiday was created in 1990 by Daniel Volk from Cleveland, OH. Volk is a yo-yo demonstrator. National Yo-Yo Day was established as June 6th to honor of the birthday of Donald F. Duncan Sr., the founder of Duncan Toy Company.

While June 6th is recognized as Yo-Yo Day, there is some unsubstantiated reference to June 10th.

Yo-Yo Trivia

The worlds largest Yo-Yo weighs 256 pounds, and is on display at the National Yo-Yo museum.

In 1992, Jeffrey Hoffman took a Yo-Yo into space aboard the shuttle Atlantis.

Hot Air Balloon Day

Date When Celebrated : This day is always observed June 5

Today is Hot Air Balloon Day. Let’s celebrate these bright and colorful, lighter than air craft.

The first manned lighter than air balloon flight was on November 11, 1783. Ever since then, tethered and untethered balloons have been used for a wide variety of purposes. Beginning in the Civil War, they were used for reconnaissance. They have been used for travel, going from point A to point B. Nowadays, they are mostly limited to air shows and festivals, and for hot air balloon rides from a hobby and entertainment perspective.

Hydrogen versus Helium Versus Hot Air Balloons:

Highly flammable Hydrogen is the lightest gas on earth. It is also plentiful. Early Balloon and Dirigibles used Hydrogen with often disastrous results. The Hindenburg disaster is the most well known. On the other hand, Helium is a fairly stable gas. But, it is scarce and therefore, far more expensive. It is not as light as hydrogen, so payload size is reduced. Hot air balloons use regular air. It is heated, causing air molecules to expand and become lighter than air. The resulting lift occurs after the air inside of the balloon is light enough to overcome the weight of the balloon, the basket, and any humans passengers and cargo.

Texas Hot Air Balloon Crash: How Safe is the Aerial Activity?

Ideally, one should celebrate this day, by taking a ride in a Hot Air Balloon. You can also look for hot air balloon shows and festivals. Another idea, is just to read and learn more about to air balloons.

Today’s  Quote: “We were born believing. A man bears beliefs as a tree bears apples. – – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Repeat Day

Date When Celebrated : Always June 3

Repeat Day is an opportunity to do things over and over again. Repeat Day is an opportunity to do things over and over again. (hee, hee)

Hopefully you will choose to repeat things you enjoy doing. Pick a wide array of foods, snacks, and activities, and repeat them today. As a matter of fact, it’s perfectly okay to repeat them over and over again today. It’s also perfectly okay to avoid dong things you don’t like. It’s a certainty that you will not enjoy distasteful things the second time around.

Today’s Quote: Those who do not remember the past, are condemned to repeat it.

National Rocky Road Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always observed on June 2

National Rocky Road Day is all about eating ice cream…… specifically Rocky Road ice cream.

Want to make your own Rocky Road Ice Cream? Just add nuts (almonds and/or pecans), mini marshmallows, and chunks of semisweet chocolate to your favorite ice cream recipe. Today would be the perfect day to make, and certainly eat, a batch of Rocky Road ice cream.

If you aren’t into making ice cream, or just don’t have the time, you can buy Rocky Road ice cream at any grocery store. Or, visit your favorite ice cream store for a cone (large today).

Today’s Chuckle: “I saw a study that said speaking in front of a crowd is considered the number one fear of the average person. Number two was death. This means to the average person, if you have to be at a funeral, you would rather be in the casket than doing the eulogy.” – – Jerry Seinfeld
