National Video Games Day

Date When Celebrated :

Video Games Day – always on July 8

National Video Games Day – always on September 12

Video Games Day celebrates popular video games that stormed onto the market, and changed the way your kids play games. From Atari to Nintendo to Xbox, video games provide all too many hours of playing time on your television set.

In grandma and grandpa’s day, they had stick horses for toys and playtime. Todays kids (big kids and little kids) have an enormous array of video games to play. Before you get tired of one game, another one hits the market.

Our extensive research into this special day discovered two separately distinct dates. Also, both dates for this special day refer to it as Video Games Day and National Video Games Day. Based upon our research results, we give the edge to September 12th as National Video Games Day. Lucky gamer that you are, you get to celebrate two video games days.

Celebrate  National Video Games Day by playing video games. If you are off from school (or if you are a big kid off from work), make this a marathon day for video games. Better still, invite a few friends and hold a competition. Just make certain that you have enough controllers.

Thought for the Day: You never really appreciate something until it’s gone Toilet paper is a good example.

Father Daughter Take a Walk Together Day

Date When Celebrated :  This holiday is always held on July 7

The relationship between a father and a daughter is a very special one. While dad is struggling to balance work and home life, little girls grow up all too quickly. (Dad, don’t you wish you could keep them just the age they are right now!?) This means the time spent together is very, very special. Grown up daughters are wrapped up in their own busy lives. That makes the limited time available to spend with dad even more precious. Yes, Father Daughter Take a Walk Together Day a very special occasion indeed.

Use Father Daughter Take a Walk Together Day  as a time to bond with each other or to renew bonds, and to create new memories. You don’t have to spend the entire day together to make a “memory to last a lifetime”. A simple walk will do. Spend that time talking about anything and everything. What you talk about, is nowhere near as important as just strolling along together, on a bright and sunny summer day. Find things to laugh about, too. It might be the funny way a toad hops across the path in front of you. Or, share a memory from years past.

Do You want to make it a perfect and most memorable Father Daughter Take a Walk Together Day? Plan your walk with an ice cream shop along the route.

National Fried Chicken Day is day to enjoy crisp and tasty, finger licking good fried chicken.

Fried chicken is one of America’s favorite meals. Sure, we all know that fried foods are not good for us. But, fried chicken tastes ohhhhh so good. We just can’t resist having it on a regular basis.

There’s just one thing you need to do celebrate this day: Eat some fried chicken. You can have it for lunch, dinner or cold leftovers as a snack. Better still, have it for lunch, dinner, AND for a snack.

Chicken Trivia:

  • When it was first cooked and served, Fried chicken was a sign of wealth
  • The chicken came before the egg. At least, we’re pretty sure it did.
  • There are 26 people in the U.S. listed on whitepages.com with the last name “Chicken”. None have the first name “Fried”.
  • The fear of chickens is called Alektorophobia.
  • Modern domesticated chickens are descendants of the red jungle fowl of India and Southeast.

  • Chickens were originally domesticated and bred for cockfighting, not for food.
  • Waste made by a chicken in its lifetime can make enough electricity to run a 100 watt bulb for five hours!

Today’s Cluckle (That’s right…. Cluckle!)  ” Why did the chicken cross the playground? …To get to the other slide!

Japanese Proverb: It’s better to be the head of a chicken and the rear end of an ox.

Work-a-Holic Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always observed on July 5

Today is Work-a-Holic Day. It recognizes the guy, or gal, who works all of the time……. even during holidays. While just about everyone is enjoying the Fourth of July holiday, the Work-a-holic is off working on some project. He can’t relax. It’s not in his nature. He’s addicted to work. It’s not necessarily work out of need. It’s work because there either is work to be done, or there’s a  perceived work project to do.

Today’s Saying: “All Work and no play, makes John a dull boy.”  … Author unknown.

How do you know if your a work-a-holic:

  • It’s the Fourth of July weekend, and you are at work or brought home work.
  • You are working because “It’s fun!” Yes, we’ve heard that one before.
  • You work because you want to, not because you need to. (yeah, right)
  • You are always the first one to work and/or the last one to leave.
  • It’s Saturday, and you’re working.
  • It’s Sunday, and you’re working.
  • You’re last thoughts as you fall asleep are related to work.

If you are a work-a-holic, we encourage you to use  Work-a-Holic Day to break the habit. Simply take today off.

Do you know a work-a-holic? We suggest you introduce your work-a-holic friends and loved ones to Hammock Day and to Relaxation Day.

Sidewalk Egg Frying Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always held on July 4

Sidewalk Egg Frying Day is today. Hmmm…. Do you wonder why we have such a day?

It’s July, the middle of summer. It’s hotter than blazes. It’s steamy, unbearable heat. Everything you touch is hot, sizzling hot. Why, its so hot that you could fry an egg on the sidewalk. You can also throw some bacon on the sidewalk, to fry up along with your eggs.

We wonder if anyone has ever tried to fry eggs on the sidewalk. We have not. What about you? We realize many of you will now rush out under the hot noonday sun to fry some eggs on your sidewalk. Once you do so, who will eat it!?

Have a great  Sidewalk Egg Frying Day!

Today’s Quote: ” Summer bachelors, like summer breezes, are never as cool as they pretend to be.” – – Nora Ephron

The History and Origin of Sidewalk Egg Frying Day:

Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day.

We find it quite odd that this day is celebrated on July 4, as it is dwarfed by the Fourth of July celebrations. We do hope you give some recognition to this special day before this evening’s fireworks begin.

International Cherry Pit Spitting Day

Date When Celebrated : First Saturday of July

In 1974, Herb Teichman of Eau Claire, MI. Held a cherry pit spitting tournament as a joke, at a picnic. It was a real hit, and has been held annually since that very first tournament in 1974. Little did Teichman know at the time, that this would become an annual event, and spark the creation of International Cherry Pit Spitting Day .

The timing for this holiday on the first Saturday in July is perfect, as the cherries are ripe. As we hold Fourth of July and summer picnics, fresh cherries are available in abundance.

Are you looking to break the record? Well, you’d better start practicing. The world record  for cherry pit spitting is 100′ 4″ !!

Celebrate this special day by holding or participating in a cherry pit spitting contest.

About the date: Herb Teichman, the originator to the Cherry Pit Spitting contest, set the first Saturday in July for this annual event. There are some references to this day always being on July 7th. This is erroneous. It is not a fixed date.

Today’s Quote: “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.” – – Vince Lombardi

The History and Origin of International Cherry Pit Spitting Day:

We know almost everything there is to know about the roots of this holiday. We do not know who created the holiday itself. or the year. We suspect it was Herb Teichman, and the special day was coined a year or two after the first tournament in1974.

We also do not know why it referred to as an “International” day. But, we encourage people around the world to hold a cherry pit spitting tournament.

I Forgot Day

I Forgot Day Date... - Holidays That Might Get Overlooked | Facebook

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always held on July 2

I Forgot Day, by definition, today is not a day to remember. So, just what are you forgetting? Can you even remember? Is it important? Hopefully, not.

Some days are days to remember and to cherish all of our lives. Others, like today, are ones to be forgotten. If you are having a bad day, it’s just as well that today is I Forgot Day. We do hope that you are not getting married or having a baby today.

Some people view today as an opportunity to express their regrets for forgetting something, and to make amends. They do so by sending cards and flowers, apologizing for their memory lapse. The trouble is, if you forget something important tomorrow, you have to wait a whole year for the next I Forgot Day to arrive.

I Forgot Day is closely related to I’m Sorry Day.

Thought for Today: ” Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names.” – – John F. Kennedy

The Origin of I Forgot Day:

It took us a long time to find any information about the origin and originator of this special day. We thought perhaps the creator forgot to record his (or her) creation.

Finally, Amy Miller wrote us and told us that her mom, Gaye Andersen of DeMotte, IN. created this day.

Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day

WGRZ on Twitter: "Today is Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day! What flavor of ice cream would you create?… "

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always observed on July 1

Summer is in full swing. Its hot and sizzling. You need something to help cool off. What a perfect time for Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day.

Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day gives you the chance to create a new flavor of ice cream. Maybe, your new creation will be a hit, and become wildly popular.

Just how many flavors of ice cream is there? Those of you old enough to remember, will recall the “28 Flavors” of Howard Johnson’s restaurant. Howard Johnson’s actually had far more than 28 flavors. They always had 28 flavors in stock (hopefully) at a time. Those 28 flavors is just the tip of the iceberg. The combinations are seemingly endless.

Make today a fun day. Hold a formal or impromptu creative ice cream party. Make sure you have lots of flavors, toppers, and additives, so people at the party can get real crazy (errr, creative).

Meteor Watch Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always observed on June 30

We sure hope that the weather in your area calls for clear, moonless skies tonight. Today is Meteor Watch Day, a time to look to the skies for meteor showers. Will you be lucky enough to see meteors streaking across the night sky? We sure hope so.

Also called “Shooting Stars” or “Fallen Stars”, meteors are space dust and ice that enter the earth’s atmosphere. Meteors can be as small as specks of dust. As they enter the atmosphere at high speeds, they burn up, producing light as they streak across the night sky. Sometimes, you see them streak across the sky and disappear at the horizon. Other times, they end suddenly, burning out right before your eyes.

Seeing a shooting star is a sign of good luck. With a little luck, you can see a meteor just about any night of the year. But, the best times to see meteors is during a meteor shower. There are a number of meteor showers each year. The best annual show is the Perseid Meteor shower each August.
